Some homework hints and reminders:

Literature/Reading

It so easy to put off reading for AR.  Before you know it, weeks have flown by and little to no reading has been done.  AR individualizes reading to your child’s reading level and ability.  As I tell the children, if you don’t practice at basketball, you won’t be a good basketball player.  If you don’t  practice doing the splits, you won’t be able to do them at cheerleading tryouts.

Reading is going to be getting more difficult as your child progresses through middle school and into high school.  Please encourage your child to read successfully at their level so they may increase their reading ability and move up in reading levels as they begin to challenge themselves.  AR is 25% of your child's report card grade.  Remember, the Book of the Bible test must be taken and passed with 80% or higher before midterms as posted on the school calendar.

How are their homework grades?  Are they answering every part of the question, or do they only answer one part?

Most answers are to be in complete sentences, not sentence fragments.  You can check over their work to make sure they are doing this, along with capital letters at the beginning and periods at the end.

Do they re-read the story before the test?  Some stories are a little longer and this is very important to do!  If your child has difficulty reading the stories, then, perhaps, you could read it to them, or take turns reading to each other.

Math

We are taking divisibility rules and prime number tests so the children do not rely completely on their calculators.  They also need  to learn up to 12 X 12.  Tests are given on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  They have until the end of third quarter to finish.  I told them to write in all the answers they were unable to do during the test after it has been checked and returned.  Also, they each need to make individualized flash cards of the ones they got incorrect.  They can study these on the way to school and at the end of each class period when there are a few minutes left and your child is one who packs up early to go to the next class.

Remember that homework may be corrected often to achieve the highest A grade possible.  Work must be done in pencil so they may erase their errors to write correct answers.

Sometimes there is not enough time during class to get to all questions.  I am available after school to answer  questions.  Usually all it takes is a few minutes.

6J Memory Work

Does your child write out his/her memory before the day it is due?

Do you look it over for spelling mistakes, or missed words?

Does your child say memory to you to practice?

Two very importants points:

1.   Does your child keep an accurate assignment book?  More than just writing down “ws?”  With all they have to do during and after school, it really helps to keep an accurate assignment book.  Do they include any special instructions their teachers give them?  Many times a teacher will alter the directions in the book or on the worksheet.  If your child does not note these changes, then it often results in more wrong and a lower grade.

2.  Does your child regularly bring home ALL graded papers?  That is perhaps the best way for you to keep current on how your child is doing.  Your child should have one section in their expandable folders for graded papers to go home and for papers and grade reports that need to be signed and returned to school.

3.  If you have concerns, please, do not hesitate to visit with your child’s teachers.

These are some ways to help your child do their very best and be successful!

NJHS News and Notes

 What is NJHS?

National Junior Honor Society is an organization for students in 7th and 8th grades. The student must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. For 7th graders, the GPA is based on their 6th grade report card grades. For 8th graders, it is a cumulative average of their 6th and 7th grade report card grades.

NJHS is more than being on the honor roll. It emphasizes scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. While the academic criterion is important and should be considered first, membership should never be considered on the basis of grades alone. A student must demonstrate strength in all five areas.

NJHS is a service club organization. We do many service projects around school and in our community. It is an honor and a privilege to be member of the National Junior Honor Society.

Online Textbooks

Starting 3rd quarter, we will no longer be taking the timed multiplication tests.  Keep reviewing your facts!!!  They will come in handy when we are doing fractions, common denominators, lowest terms, stuff like that!!

We will also be taking other tests.  First test will be the Divisibility Rules of 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10.  They are in your notes.

When the Divisibility Rule test is passed, then you take the Prime Number test.  You will memorize the first 25 prime numbers between 0 and 100.  You can study from the 1000 Prime Number sheet you got in class.

Click here for MATH practice problems.
There are all sorts of practice pages, fun animation, and practice quizzes and tests, tutorials, and MORE!!!

Math notebooks will be sent home a couple days before the unit test for parents to look over, sign, and return to school. This will give you the opportunity to help your child review for the test. Students are allowed to use their notes while taking math quizzes and tests.

You can also correct your daily assignments up to the highest grade. Sometimes, when calculators are used on certain assignments, only one time corrections will be allowed. Better to learn from your mistakes now, than to repeat them on quizzes and tests!

Also for math, click above to get extra practice and help in math. We will be doing various activities from that website during class. It is good to use it to review each evening, even if it is for only 5 - 10 minutes.

Spirit's registered AKC name is Woodlands Take a Chance. He is a blue merle color.

Spirit was born April 11, 2006.  I show him in everything else.
He has his AKC Rally Novice Title (at only 10 months old), AKC Rally Advanced Title, and his AKC Rally Excellent Title.
He also has his CGC - Canine Good Citizenship Certificate.
He has his HIC, too!  That stands for Herding Instinct Certificate.

Ripley's registered AKC name is Woodlands Believe It or Not. He is a red merle color.

Ripley was born June 4, 2007.
He has his CGC  (Canine Good Citizenship) when he was only 10 months old!
He also has his HIC (Herding Instinct Certificate).  He is such a good little sheep herder!

Ripley has his AKC Rally Novice and Rally Advanced titles.

Spirit and Ripley are half-brothers.  They have the same mom, but different dads.

Spirit has 17 points and Ripley has 3 points toward their Altered-ASCA Championship! Now, all he needs is a couple of wins with "majors" and he will be a Champion!!  Majors are hard to get with altered dogs, but we will have fun trying!

I am so proud of both my dogs!  They are so much fun!  It is especially fun staying in hotels with them when we go to dog shows.

Red Hats!!!
This was the best part of turning 50 years old!!! I love my Red Hat sisters!!! We do all sorts of fun things together!
It is so fun dressing up for Red Hat events. We have a saying, "You are not over accessorized until you tip over!" It doesn't get any better than that!!

Other hobbies of mine:
tatting                         wood stove cooking               Dutch oven cooking
wool rug braiding         primitive rug hooking              rubber stamping
scrapbooking               container gardening               Ancestry.com

As you can plainly see, I am never bored! :-)
