Mrs Jacobsen

Special request to all you kids returning to school: If you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn't have many friends or because they are shy or not as pretty or not dressed in the most "in" clothes - PLEASE step up! Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kindness might just make a BIG difference in someone's life!

Some homework hints and reminders

How are your child's homework grades?  Are they answering every part of the question, or do they only answer one part?

Most answers are to be in complete sentences, not sentence fragments.  You can check over their work to make sure they are doing this, along with capital letters at the beginning and periods at the end.  Cursive handwriting is required for most assignments.

Does your child re-read the story before the test?  Some stories are a little longer and this is very important to do!  If your child has difficulty reading the stories, then, perhaps, you could read it to them, or take turns reading to each other.

Remember that homework may be corrected often to achieve the highest A grade possible. Math work must be done in pencil so they may erase their errors to write correct answers.

Sometimes there is not enough time during class to get to all questions.  I am available after school to answer  questions.  Usually all it takes is a few minutes.

Math News

Math Challenge Problems will be given with many math assignments. These are for students who love math and are eager for more challenging problems. It also gives them a sneak peak into pre-algebra for 7th or 8th grade. These problems are optional.

EXTRA MATH CREDIT: Be sure to keep up with your math corrections. This is your extra credit to help raise or maintain your grade.

You can also correct your daily assignments up to the highest grade. Better to learn from your mistakes now, than to repeat them on quizzes and tests!

NJHS News and Notes

What is NJHS?

National Junior Honor Society is an organization for students in 7th and 8th grades. The student must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. For 7th graders, the GPA is based on their 6th grade report card grades. For 8th graders, it is a cumulative average of their 6th and 7th grade report card grades.
NJHS is more than being on the honor roll. It emphasizes scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. While the academic criterion is important and should be considered first, membership should never be considered on the basis of grades alone. A student must demonstrate strength in all five areas.
NJHS is a service club organization. We do many service projects around school and in our community. It is an honor and a privilege to be member of the National Junior Honor Society.

5J Memory Work
  • Memory is two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Memory will be written in class on Monday in your child's memory spiral.
  • Your child is to say his/her memory to you before coming to school to practice. Parent signs memory  to let me know you have listened to it.

Does your child write out his/her memory before the day it is due?

Do you look it over for spelling mistakes, or missed words?

Does your child say memory to you to practice?

Two very important points
  1. Does your child keep an accurate assignment book? More than just writing down "ws?" With all they have to do during and after school, it really helps to keep an accurate assignment book. Do they include any special instructions their teachers give them? Many times a teacher will alter the directions in the book or on the worksheet. If your child does not note these changes, then it often results in more wrong and a lower grade.
  2. Does your child regularly bring home ALL graded papers? That is perhaps the best way for you to keep current on how your child is doing. Your child should have one section in their expandable folders for graded papers to go home and for papers and grade reports that need to be signed and returned to school.

If you have concerns, please, do not hesitate to visit with your child's teachers.

These are some ways to help your child do their very best and be successful!
